SYE Career Compass

Know where you are. See where you can go. Decide what comes next.

A professional career-navigation layer for yachting: role, vessel, certificates, competence, training, progression, transition and talent.

Career navigation

Not a generic list of courses. A route map before the course.

A yachting career is not decided by one certificate alone. Real progression depends on role, vessel context, competence, flag, safe manning, experience, professional judgement, personal direction and the kind of responsibility you want next.

Career Compass exists to help you separate what is mandatory, what depends on context and what is strategically useful for your next move.

Career Operating Logic

Five questions before you spend time or money.

01Where am I now?
02Where do I want to go?
03What am I missing?
04What should I learn?
05What should I do next?

The principle: training is one tool inside a larger professional-development system. Roadmaps, diagnostics, decision tools, mentoring and professional profiles should help you choose the right intervention before buying the next course.

The three labels

We separate what is required, contextual and useful.

Required / mandatory

Only used when a requirement is verified by an official source or relevant authority.

Depends on vessel, flag or role

Used when the answer changes with GT, kW, flag, safe manning, operating area or assigned duties.

Recommended for career growth

Useful for progression, confidence or employability, but not presented as mandatory unless verified.

Official-source discipline

Helpful content, anchored to serious sources.

SYE Career Compass works with official-source discipline. Every serious requirement must be checked against the relevant flag state, maritime administration, employer, training provider or safe manning document.

Professional Profile · Technical Talent Pool

Build a professional profile first. Join the Talent Pool only by choice.

SYE is developing a structured professional-profile layer so career guidance, training and future talent introductions are based on more than a CV file.

1. SYE Professional Profile

Your career context: department, current role, certificates, experience, target role, gaps, development priorities and preferred next step. Its first purpose is guidance and professional development.

2. SYE Technical Talent Pool

An optional permission layer for people who want SYE to consider them for future curated opportunities or professional introductions. Joining the profile does not automatically mean joining the Talent Pool.

  • No job guarantee and no automatic distribution of CVs.
  • Talent use requires separate, explicit consent.
  • CVs and profile data will not be shared with employers or third parties without the appropriate permission.
  • Future value can include curated introductions, talent readiness, career-path review, interview preparation, training plans and sea-to-shore positioning.

Current live route: Engineering starts with the Career Roadmap and its optional profile information. Additional department routes and the full Professional Profile layer will be introduced progressively.

Career routes in development

One Career Compass, multiple professional pathways.

The objective is to build useful route maps around real professional questions: entering the sector, progressing within a department, reaching HOD responsibility, changing discipline or moving from sea to shore.

Next decision

Start with the route, not with the product.

This guide is educational and does not replace advice from the relevant flag state, maritime administration, employer, training provider or legal adviser. Requirements may vary by vessel, flag, GT, propulsion power, commercial/private operation, trading area, assigned duties and safe manning document.
